Siblings Competing…

On Friday (8/25), we’ll host our own cross town rivalry game. Thousands of Worthington fans will be on the TWHS campus for the Thomas Worthington v. Worthington Kilbourne Football game.  It is a great night for our kids and families. Our administrators will be sweating every single detail from start to finish. We will all sleep more soundly after Friday night. Whether you’re wearing Wolves gear or Cards gear our goal is likely the same: a win for your team and a safe night for everyone involved.

In the United States Pro Football is certainly America’s pastime.  In Ohio High School Friday night football is a community event.  In Worthington I don’t believe football is more important than any other sport, but certainly between the football teams, the marching bands, and the cheerleaders, this is the athletic event where the greatest number of students participate on one evening and thus it also brings the largest crowds of the year.

I love when our marching bands perform together on the field!  I love when the cheerleaders come together for hello cheers and pose for a joint picture!  I love to see coach Edwards and Picetti on the field together talking before the game and I love that we get hundreds of students excited about being in the student section! (btw, as an adult you may not want to sit too close to the student section.  Kids say the darndest things at any age, just like our friends did when we were their age, and I find it’s best if we just don’t hear all of those things as adults…)

As the Superintendent with a high school nephew and a high school daughter who both attend Thomas Worthington when I wear my Wolves gear to work or around the house I often get the cross eye…  That said, I often remind people that I grew-up a Cardinal but didn’t attend Thomas Worthington or Worthington Kilbourne.  It was just Worthington back in the olden days before the internet or cellular phones… .I did grow-up on Hard Road and had Worthington Kilbourne been open I would have attended there.

I root for both teams in this game.  I’m hopeful my nephew Isaiah has a good game.  I’ll always root for him as a Cardinal.  I’m equally hopeful my friend Graham Brown has a good game for the Wolves.  I’m hopeful that Mr. Scoles and Mr. Defrancesco bring the music to a fever pitch.  I’m hopeful fans will carpool because parking will be at a premium.  I’m hopeful my dad won’t email the coach about play calling after the game…I’m hopeful for a great night of having the Cards and Wolves together in a safe and fun environment.  It’s siblings competing.  They should compete like crazy and when it’s over we remember that they’re siblings and all part of this amazing place we call Worthington!

Go Cards! Go Wolves!

-Trent Bowers, Superintendent

This Friday night, before the game, the Thomas Worthington Football Community will honor former Cardinal Dimitrious Stanley. The ceremony will be around 6:35pm. Please join us as we celebrate this Cardinal Great.
